Manipur: JAC demands probe into death after delivery

A member of the JAC, alleged that Rabiya Begum, 29, wife of Nasir Ahmed alias Sanatomba Rabiya lost her life due to the negligence of medical staff of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital.

The joint action committee formed in connection with the death of Rabiya Begum on Wednesday demanded a strict enquiry over the death which occurred after a child delivery at JNIMS hospital.

Raising the demands, locals of Kshetri Mayai Leikai, Imphal East staged a sit-in-protest at the premises of the locality in front of Athletic Brother’s Association (ABA) Ground on Wednesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, one Md Khalin Shah, a member of the JAC, alleged that Rabiya Begum, 29, wife of Nasir Ahmed alias Sanatomba Rabiya lost her life due to the negligence of medical staff of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital.

He said Rabiya was admitted at the hospital for child delivery on Monday. As per the advice from the medical staff of the hospital, Rabiya stayed in the hospital and underwent a normal delivery of her child the next day.

He narrated that the medical staff allowed Nasir to see his wife after he made a request to see her, and she was found in normal condition. However, Nasir was told after some hours to prepare some blood units and medicines as the health condition of Rabiya deteriorated.

Khalin continued that the hospital authority told Nasir in the meantime that his wife, Rabiya passed away.

He said the hospital authorities led by JNIMS director and medical superintendent, JNIMS should conduct a high level enquiry to find out the cause of the death of Rabiya. The JAC also urged the authority concerned to take appropriate and necessary legal and departmental action against the concerned doctors and staff of the hospital.

Moreover, the JAC will submit a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to find out the cause of the death, he added. The JAC will not accept the body until justice is served, he said.

Protesters held demonstrations with placards which read, ‘we condemned the death of Rabiya’, ‘we want justice’, ‘we demand justice from government’, etc.
