Manipur government declares dry day throughout state during elections

‘Dry Day’ declared across Manipur during the first phase of the elections from 4 pm of April 17 to 4 pm of April 19 with immediate effect and from 4 pm of April 24 to 4 pm of April 26 during the second phase.

The Manipur government has declared ‘Dry Day’ throughout the state during the upcoming Inner and Outer Manipur Lok Sabha elections slated to be held in April.

As per the latest order issued by the Additional Commissioner of Excise, Manipur, Ng Roman Singh on Friday, ‘Dry Day’ has been declared across the state during the first phase of the elections from 4 pm of April 17 to 4 pm of April 19 with immediate effect and from 4 pm of April 24 to 4 pm of April 26 during the second phase.

It also stated that a dry day has been imposed on the date of counting of votes on June 4.

The move was taken in pursuance of Section 135c of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951 and in exercise of the power conferred under Section 17(3) of Eastern Bengal & Assam Excise Act, 1910 which is extended in the state of Manipur, it mentioned.

It further said that no spirituous, fermented or intoxicating liquor substances of like nature shall be sold, given or distributed at hotel, eating house, tavern, shop or any other place, public or public, within a polling area during the 48 hours ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of poll for election in the polling areas.

The order covers all the 57 liquor license holders including exempted categories, the statement said.
