Manipur: Former BJYM president arrested

Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, who was arrested by the Imphal Police team, was produced in front of district magistrate Imphal West on Sunday.

Former president of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, who was arrested by the Imphal Police team, was produced in front of district magistrate Imphal West on Sunday.

The duty magistrate remanded him and others arrested in connection with the crime to six days of police custody.

Barish Sharma was arrested in connection with the October 14 incident that took place at Sega Road, Khwairakpam Leikai in Imphal West district, where armed persons, numbering around 20, in an attempt to abduct a person, fired several rounds of gunshots injuring 5 people. Police have already arrested five persons in connection with the crime.

According to police, Barish was arrested at around 11:20 pm on Saturday from his Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhi Mapal residence in Imphal East.

On the night of October 14, at around 10:30 pm, amidst curfew imposed by the district administration, around 20 armed men in civilian fatigues came and tried to abduct a person from Sega Road, Khwairakpam Leikai.

Local Meira Paibis and club members tried to stop them from committing the act. It was then that the gang fired rounds of gunshots injuring at least five individuals including a woman.

Angry over the act, Youths of Manipur and womenfolk stormed the house of Barish at Wangkhei. However, as he was not present, his wife and family members tendered apologies on his behalf.

Two days back, 10 members of the JAC met CM Biren during which the chief minister informed the JAC delegation that Manoharmayum Barish Sharma was not the president of BJYM and he is no way related with BJYM.

Barish was charged with the Arms Act, violation of curfew, criminal intimidation, and attempted murder.

Other culprits arrested earlier are Nongthombam Tony Meitei (36), S/o (L) Kumar of Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai, who is the vice president of BJYM Manipur Pradesh and presently staying at Nungoi Makha Leikai; Ningthoujam Vicky (30), S/o N Bhorot of Kongba Nandeibam Leikai and Khaidem Nibas (33), S/o Lukhoi of Singjamei Wangma Pebiya Pandit Leikai; Alex Ningombam, S/o Ajit Kumar and Gurumayum Rayban, S/o (L) Robindro, both from Brahmapur Laljilakpa Leikai.

Meanwhile, police arrested the alleged shooter of Ahanthem Ritesh of Uripok Sorbon Thingel and produced before the duty magistrate who sent him to ten days police custody for further interrogation.

The 23-year-old student Ritesh was allegedly shot by one 27-year-old Takhellambam Dipu, son of late T Bijoy of Uripok Polem Leikai on Friday night at the residence of one Thokchom Yaikhomba, 25 yrs, s/o Chitaranjan alias Yaima from Uripok Khoisnam Leikai, Imphal.

T Dipu was arrested by police on Sunday and produced before the duty magistrate for further interrogation.

According to sources, the injured student is presently studying in 5th semester at DM college of Arts.

Family members said that Ritesh was called out from his home by Yaikhomba at around 9:30 pm. Yaikhomba had been taken into custody by police from his residence on Saturday.

The shooting took place in the top floor of Yaikhomba's house. The bullet hit Ritesh on the left side of his jaw and passed through the right side. Upon hearing the news of the incident, he was immediately rushed to the hospital.

The injured student is still in critical condition at Raj Medicity.
