Manipur: Demand raised to arrest culprits involved in assault

Some drivers and handymen of Senapati district were allegedly assaulted by unknown armed miscreants at Sekmai around 10 pm on Friday.

Senapati District Truck Owners Association (SDTOA) and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union (SDTDU) on Saturday urged the authorities concerned to book the culprits involved in the alleged assault of some drivers and handymen of Senapati district recently.

A release issued by SDTOA advisor P Piju said that a joint meeting of the association and union was held at Karong, Senapati on Saturday regarding the alleged assault of some drivers and handymen of Senapati district by unknown armed miscreants at Sekmai around 10 pm on Friday.

Members present at the meeting after thorough deliberations took 3 resolutions unanimously, it said. The resolutions include immediate arrest of the culprits involved within 48 hours, beginning from the day of assault, it asserted.

It also resolved not to ply in the said route until the rampant mushrooming of illegal tax collection from Kangpokpi to Imphal stretch were completely stopped. It further urged the union and state to stop collection of money from the vehicles immediately.

They also expressed shock over the attempt to murder the drivers and handymen, resulting in grievously injuries, it mentioned. The drivers and handymen are Th Paul, Pavei Ng, M Hrapu, A Payio and Sanjay Khadka, it stated.

The incident of mental, physical, financial and verbal harassment has been happening continuously for months in spite of the efforts to supply the needs of the people of the state, it added.
