Manipur: Court directs DGP to award Irilbung police

DGP, Manipur and SP of Imphal East have been directed to grant additional incentives and award to Iribung police station officer in-charge P Paojeanlung and his team for the arrest of a convict who had been absconding from the arms of law for the last 20 years.

Special Judge, NDPS (FTC), Manipur, Alex Muivah has directed DGP, Manipur and SP of Imphal East to grant additional incentives and award to Iribung police station officer in-charge P Paojeanlung and his team for the arrest of a convict who had been absconding from the arms of law for the last 20 years.

Convict Md Amzad Ali, son of Md Yusuf Ali of Keirao Awang Leikai, Imphal East was convicted by Special Court NDPS, Manipur on January 20, 2002 under section 20(b)(i) of NDPS Act, 1985 for illegal possession of 165 kg of contraband ganja on January 16, 2000. Since then, the convict has been absconding - for the last 20 years.

In compliance with the issuance of a warrant of arrest against the convict, inspector P Paojeanlung (OC) arrested and produced the convict before the court. It submitted that OC Irilbung and his team members, including ASI Yumnam Romeo Meitei, Meitrambu Korung Maring, W Jacky, and L Manglemba Singh, walked extra miles for the arrest of the warrantee from the paddy field at Keirao Menjor Ingkhol on November 11.

Special Court NDPS, Manipur, while convicting the convict in 2002, sentenced him for three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 in default of which the convict has to undergo two months of rigorous imprisonment. The convict has paid the fine amount Rs 2,000 on November 9, 2022.

The court, after perusal records, stated that Irilbung PS’s OC team has done a commendable job by causing the arrest of the convict.

While submitting the report before the court, the OC, in his report, mentioned that the local people, including the Ward No 1 member named, Md Rajaoddin of Keirao Makting Gram Panchayat had concealed the whereabouts of the convict and the ward member had even issued a written statement stating that the convict had not returned home for the last eight years. The OC further mentioned that necessary action be taken against the ward member for wilfully concealing the convict.
