On January 17, leaders of the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) met the CEO, Manipur with a memorandum requesting the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to change the date of the first phase of election so that it may not fall on Sunday, which is the day of worship, in the larger interest of the Christian community in the state.

Following the failure of the CEC’s office for rescheduling of polling dates for nine hill Assembly constituencies dominated by Christians, the AMCO on Thursday held a meeting of various church leaders at MBC, Chingmeirong in Imphal, to decide further course of action.

AMCO president S Prim Vaiphei told the media that the meeting resolved to give a reminder to ECI to reschedule the first phase polling date which falls on Sunday. The meeting also decided to take up a court case against the violation of the rights of the Christian citizens if the ECI fails to act to their reminder, he added.

He further said that the meeting also resolved to meet the chief minister regarding their demand, to form a Christian Action Committee and to conduct prayer regarding the matter.

"The Christian community will not sit back but will continue to fight to ensure the rights of the Christians," Vaiphei added.
