The Bharatiya Janata Party - Manipur Pradesh on Monday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding to replace the Assam Rifles with any other paramilitary forces permanently from Manipur in the interest of the general public.
Manipur BJP, in its five-point memorandum, stated that the role of Assam Rifles regarding the prevailing ethnic unrest, in maintaining peace and tranquillity in the state, has been under considerable amount of criticism and public outrage.
It alleged the Assam Rifles of failing to maintain neutrality to restore peace in the state. It said that the public anger and protest over the Assam Rifles for playing the role of partisanship in this highly delicate and sensitive situation continues to be witnessed unabated even on Tuesday.
The recent unfortunate Kwakta incident on August 4 where three civilians were brutally killed by Kuki terrorists while they were sleeping is one glaring example, it mentioned. It asserted that the state force, who launched an operation to nab the killers, were reportedly stopped by the Assam Rifles on the road. This is not the first case, it said, adding in many cases the Assam Rifles personnel have acted similarly.
The Assam Rifles have been charged by the public for their biased role in tackling the situation by favouring and supporting one side only, it stated. It further reiterated its demand to replace the Assam Rifles with any other paramilitary forces permanently from Manipur and appealed to bring an amicable solution to the ongoing unrest in the state at the earliest.
