Armed miscreants reportedly fired gunshots to intimidate the local womenfolk of Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West while they were sitting at the community hall of the locality around 10.15 pm on Saturday.

On the other hand, Citizen Club on Sunday strongly condemned the gun firing incidents that occurred at three locations within its jurisdiction in Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou on the late night of April 18, the day before the first phase of the Lok Sabha election in Manipur.

Khwai Lalambung Local Nupi Committee, advisor RK Bina told the media at the community hall of Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West on Sunday that the women members of the committee were sitting together for their routine ‘Nisha bandh’ activities at the same community hall.

She narrated that around 10.15 pm, two unknown miscreants who came on a motorcycle were seen riding to and fro for sometime. After a while, one of the miscreants fired two rounds on the ground while driving and fled from the area, she added.

The locals of the area recovered one empty case of 9mm bullet in the area, said Bina.
She said the committee was formed just after the May 3 incident last year. Since then, the members of the committee have been monitoring the locality every night by sitting at the community hall. The committee has been contributing necessary assistance during the time of need for the society.

“The committee is not involved in any election related issues, and there are no misunderstandings with any organisations or individuals. The reasons behind the incident still remain a riddle to the members of the committee,” she added.

The armed miscreants behind the incident must clarify at the earliest, she said. Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai is located in the heart of the city under strict security.

Speaking to the media, Citizen Club president Mahendra Naorem revealed that out of the three firing incidents that occurred simultaneously, two took place on the streets, while one incident happened in the residence of a club member.

He urged those responsible for the firing to come forward and clarify the matter.

Further stating that the Citizen Club had previously announced its commitment to inform the club about any issues or problems within the jurisdiction of the club, he reiterated this commitment and urged the community to maintain peace and harmony in the region.

“It is unfortunate that such incidents have occurred, disrupting the peace in our community. We urge everyone to ensure that such violence does not occur again,” the president said.

Additionally, Mahendra clarified that none of the executive members of the Citizen Club are affiliated with any political parties and emphasised that the Lok Sabha election held in their jurisdiction was conducted in a free and fair manner.
