A man allegedly stabbed his two-and-half-year-old son to death with a knife and further attempted to commit suicide at Lairenkabi Maning Leikai under Lamshang Police Station in Imphal West district at around 8.30 pm on Monday.
The man has been identified as one Leitanthem Somendro ,28, son of (L) Maipak of Lairenkabi Maning Leikai.
According to his family members, Somendro and his wife, Pushpha, 27, are employed as goldsmiths. The couple getting involved in a heated argument was heard around 7 am on Monday, they said. Somendro did not take lunch though Pushpa and their son, Lamnganba had their meals.
They said that at around 8.30 pm, Pushpa was heard shouting ‘Murder, Murder’ from inside the house and one L Romita, a relative, rushed towards them. Upon finding that the main door was bolted from inside, she kicked the door open and Pushpa ran out crying at the compound.
Romita found Somendro on the bed with a kitchen knife he had stabbed himself with on his abdomen and holding the hilt with his both hands, as per family members. She struck the knife down with her hands. His son was found lying on the bed motionless with stab wounds beside him.
Local meira paibis arrived at the scene and they raised suspicion that the couple had been drinking.
Both the injured father and son were admitted to RIMS while Pushpa was kept detained by meira paibis. Unfortunately, their son succumbed to his injuries around 8. 30 am on Tuesday.
Lamshang police station received information about the incident at around 9 am on Tuesday, and a police team handed over Pushpa to her maternal home at Malom.
The police have also recorded statements from Pushpa and witnesses concerning the incident. Somendro had killed his son and further attempted to commit suicide, according to police.
The mortal remains of Lamnganba were handed over to the family members after conducting a post mortem at RIMS Mortuary. Somendro, who sustained stab wounds at three different spots on his belly, is being treated at ICU, RIMS.
