Man sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment in minor rape case under POCSO

The Special Judge found Ramyo Shimray guilty of sexually assaulting the minor girls between July 28 and August 2, 2018 at a location in Ukhrul district.

Special Judge POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences), Ukhrul on Tuesday sentenced convict K Ramyo Shimray (61) to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault on two minor girls under POCSO.

The Special Judge found Ramyo Shimray guilty of sexually assaulting the minor girls between July 28 and August 2, 2018 at a location in Ukhrul district.

The Court convicted him on April 24 and scheduled to announce the quantum of penalty on April 29.

On August 8, 2018, father of the victims filed a case at Ukhrul police station alleging that his daughters, aged 8 and 6, were sexually assaulted multiple times by K Ramyo Shimray, son of late Ashung Kajingmei of Langli village, Ukhrul.

Following the report, Ukhrul police station filed a chargesheet against Ramyo Shimray, and the trial proceeded.

The Court, after considering the background of the convict, i.e. his old age, health condition, and with no source of income, and also further considering the crime committed by him against the two minor victims, who are his neighbours at the time of incident, stated that convict K Ramyo Shimray shall undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 25 years and pay a fine of Rs 2000 for the offence, punishable under Section 5(l)(m) read with Section 6 POCSO Act, 2012. In default of payment  of fine amount, he shall undergo simple imprisonment for a period of three months, the court said.

And the period of detention undergone by the accused in judicial custody shall be set off against the term of imprisonment imposed on him and the accused shall undergo the remaining sentence as provided under Section 428 CrPC, the court added.

With regards to the issue of compensation to the victims under the Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019, it shall be considered after appropriate applications are filed before the court, it said.
