Man sentenced to 15-year jail for unauthorised possession of heroin

A man from Nambol was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 15 years for unauthorised possession of 1,050 grams of heroin.

Special Judge (ND&PS), Bishnupur, W Tonen Meitei, on Monday sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment of 15 years with a fine of Rs 1 lakh for unauthorised possession of 1,050 grams of heroin.

The court on February 8 convicted Khwairakpam Romio (54) of Nambol Awang Leikai in connection with a 2004 drug case under section 21(c) NDPS Act.

Romio was arrested on October 1, 2004 along with 1.050 kilogram of heroin by a team of Special Intelligence Unit led by officer in-charge Th Ibotombi Singh at Nambol Lainingthou Khoriphaba IV Road.

After the arrest, Romio along with the seized contraband items was handed over to Nambol police station for further investigation. Subsequently, an FIR was registered and trial of the case commenced. He was produced before the same Special Court on February 8 and consequently convicted in the drug case.

“It is made clear that the period of detention that the accused had undergone prior to his conviction shall be set off against the sentence of imprisonment under section 428 CrPC”, the court stated.
