Man extorts money from driver, gets arrested in Churachandpur

A man who extorted money from a truck driver was arrested by the police in Churachandpur.

A man who extorted money from a truck driver at Boljol village in Churachandpur district was arrested by police at Pangzawl area, Churachandpur district by a team of Churachandpur Police on Tuesday.

According to Churachandpur police, the victim, K Lalmani Singh ,44, son of Tilok Singh from Zou veng, Churachandpur reported to the OC Churachandpur Police Station at 1:30 pm on Tuesday about the incident.

Lalmani Singh reported that he was on his way to Imphal driving a Tata truck (b/no. MN06T-1820) on Monday, when one unknown person stopped his vehicle at Boljol village in Churachandpur around 11:45 am and aggressively demanded to pay a sum of Rs 5,000 as tax.

Out of fear, he took out his wallet to pay the amount but the unknown person snatched his wallet and took away all his money ie a sum of Rs 32,000 and left the spot in a black bullet motorcycle without registration number.  

The extortionist was headed towards Tuibuong and Lalmani turned his vehicle and followed until he saw the black bullet motorcycle being parked in front of a food hotel at Tuibuong, as per police. 

After Lalmani entered the food hotel, the extortionist took him in his motorcycle towards an unknown destination with an excuse to get “a yearly tax slip” and left him behind in an open ground while the extortionist escaped. 

A case under FIR NO.20(2)2023 CCP-PS u/s 384/506 IPC was registered for investigation by the police.

In the course of investigation, the extortionist has been identified as one Seiminlal Haokip, 34, son of Seimang Haokip of Laijang village from Churachandpur through various sources.

Accordingly, the house of Seiminlal Haokip was raided in the early hours of Tuesday, but he was not found at home and his family members said he had not returned home for the last two-three days.

The whereabouts of the Seiminlal Haokip was enquired through different sources and finally, his location was zeroed down to Pangzawl area in Churachandpur.

Immediately, the investigating officer of the case SI Haolensang Singson and a team of Churachandpur Police rushed to Pangzawl area and arrested him in connection with the case at 3:30 pm.

The black bullet motorcycle without registration number and Rs 22,000 of the extorted money were seized from his possession at 3:40 pm. Further investigation is being taken up.
