Locals of Yairipok Mayai Keithel on Friday demonstrated a sit-in protest at the community hall of Mayai Keithel protesting against the suspicious death of Md Rashid Ahmed and formed a JAC.
Md Rashid Ahmed alias Sanayai, 37, son of Keinoumayum Bashir Ahmed from Yairipok Mayai Keithel under Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district, went missing since Tuesday and was found dead at Yambem THC on Thursday.
The sit-in protest was participated by Wangkhem Zilla Parishad nominee member Kh Sobha, Leirongthel Ningel Gram Panchayat nominee pradhan Salam Kumar, B Phainom Village chief, and representatives of VCPC Manipur, along with the members of the local clubs, organisations and Meira Paibis of the neighbouring villages including Phanjakhong, Chandrakhong, Ningel, Kakmayai, Malom, Khoirom, Jaliyangbi, and Heitroipokpi.
During the protest, JAC Against the Killing of Md Rashid Ahemad alias Sanayai of Mayai Keithel was formed. The protesters demanded the state government punish the culprits behind the suspicious death within 48 hours, cautioning strong protest if their demands are not met. The protesters also urged the people of the state to support the movement until the culprits are brought to justice.
In the event, the sister-in-law of Md Rashid, Wahida said that Md Rashid was staying with one Manglembi from Nongpok Keithelmanbi for 10 years. He returned to Mayai Keithel following his marriage, she added.
“Manglembi asked Rashid to stay with her as she was getting old and weak, so Rashid went to live with her on Tuesday,” she said. After that day, Rashid could not be contacted and he went missing, she continued.
Then on Thursday, a phone call came which informed that Rashid was found dead at Yambem PHC, Wahida maintained. She drew the attention of the state government to punish the culprits and bring them to justice.
In the protest, the JAC demanded the state government and authorities concerned o punish the culprits behind the alleged murder within 48 hours in front of the people of Manipur. The JAC cautioned strong movement unless their demand is not met. The JAC demanded the authorities conduct the post-mortem of the body witnessed by a magistrate and a member of the JAC.
The JAC also concluded not to receive the body unless justice is served. The JAC further appealed for the support of the different CSOs, clubs, and organisations in the state.
As part of the event, the participants held a one-minute silence to pay tribute to the departed soul of Md Rashid Ahmed.
