Locals of Moijing Awang Mamang Leikai under Thoubal Police Station in Thoubal district protested against the police for “unreasonably apprehending” two persons from the said locality, resulting in a major scuffle with the police force of Imphal East commando and Heingang police team around 5.30 pm on Friday.
According to sources, as the locals erupted into the scuffle accusing the police force of apprehending the people unreasonably, the police force fired tear gas cells to bring the situation under control. The mob vandalised around six police vehicles including one labelled ‘Patrol’, the sources added.
It mentioned that the two individuals picked up by the police were Md Sherajuddin alias Apik, 43, son of Kokngang and Md Manao, 37, son of Md Khamba from Thoubal Moijing Awang Mamang Leikai. The police are yet to issue the reasons for detaining the two persons, the sources alleged.
“As soon as the two were picked up by the police, the locals came together and blocked the police vehicle near Moijing Awang Leikai Primary School in protest and demanded the release of the two persons.
The police attempted to bring the situation under control by firing tear gas cells and soon after a team of Thoubal commandos arrived to provide backup,” it stated. The police released the two persons when the locals calmed down and agreed to have a talk with the police force and the village pradhan on Saturday, it added.
