The All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) on Thursday demanded the state government to immediately withdraw the state cabinet decision on legalisation of liquor, and said Chief Minister N Biren Singh should not invite another ‘June 18’ during his term.

Condemning the government's decision, Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani told media persons at its office located at Lamphel, Imphal West the organisation has been working since decades against legalisation of liquor, and upholding the ban on liquors in the state.

Nupi Samaj will not remain a mute spectator to the recent state cabinet decision regarding the legalisation of liquor, she added.

She said that due the widespread consumption of liquor in the state, many men have died while countless women have become widows. Consumption of liquor is also behind various crimes in the state, she further said.

The legalisation of liquor without public consent in the name of bringing some revenue to the state will never be accepted by Nupi Samaj, she stressed, alleging vested interest in the legalisation of liquor.
