With the support of the National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Lilong Haoreibi College, Thoubal district will be organising a one-day national seminar on the theme: ‘Role of Women in Sports’ on November 12, 2022 at the college multipurpose hall.
In a press release issued by the principal of the college, Raheijuddin Sheikh, it reiterated that Manipur is considered as the ‘power house of sports' yet the participation of Muslims, more particularly, of the women is very few.
The Manipuri Muslim women known as ‘Meitei-Pangal Women’ are also equally smart or even smarter than women of other communities in sports yet they cannot expose their potential talents because of many factors, the release said. However, during the last five years some girls of the community have come up in various fields of sports including martial arts. The seminar shall focus on the reasons why Muslim girls are responding very less in sports and suggest possible measures to be taken up in the near future for upliftment of women in sports before it is too late, the principal added.
He also said that the Manipuri Muslim women have been actively participating in most of the economic activities as their male counterparts: a unique culture which is not seen in the rest of the world where women are confined in the four walls under the purdah system. The seminar is expected to throw light on this issue in particular and various other sub- themes in general within the broad theme “Role of Women in Sports”, he added.
The seminar will be graced by intellectuals of Manipur with technical sessions from experts.
