The Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP) on Wednesday called upon the state government to consider lifting of ban on the Internet which has been in effect since May 4.

The prolonged unavailability of Internet services in Manipur has had severe repercussions, leading to disruptions in business activities and the education system, ultimately resulting in a decline across all sectors of the state, MPP returning officer K Muktasana told mediapersons in Imphal.

Highlighting the impact of the Internet ban, Muktasana emphasised the detrimental effects it has had on businesses and educational institutions. The lack of Internet access for more than 50 days has hindered communication, hampered online transactions, and impeded the progress of education in Manipur.

Moreover, the MPP representative made allegations regarding the reluctance of security personnel to engage Kuki militants despite the issuance of shoot-at-sight orders on May 4.

This, according to Muktasana, suggests that the central forces may be showing favouritism towards the Kuki militants over the Meetei villages.

The appointment of Kuldiep Singh as the security advisor and the deployment of approximately 40,000 paramilitary forces were cited by him as evidence of an unofficial imposition of Article 355 in Manipur.

The MPP urged CM Biren Singh to take immediate action to restore peace in the region and implement a resettlement programme for the displaced individuals in their respective hometowns.

Muktasana was accompanied by MPP president Ch Shamjai, its vice-president Ch Joy and other office bearers during the press briefing.
