A new project, ‘Legal Aid on Wheels’ and ‘Reaching the Unreached’, was launched on Saturday at the High Court of Manipur complex.
The project was launched by Supreme Court judge, justice PV Sanjay Kumar in the presence of chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, N Kotiswar Singh; justice MV Muralidaran of the High Court of Manipur, justice A Guneshwar Sharma and justice Kh Nobin on the theme of free legal aid and services in Manipur to outreach drive to educate the masses on their legal rights.
The objectives of the project are increasing access to justice for the poor and vulnerable by supporting the provision of a legal aid service on the spot at local clubs, community centres for providing legal aid and consultation of prevalent cases in the selected area as well as diversion of minor matters and to resolve the case before it goes through court through appropriate ADR mechanism.
For the first phase, the project will be implemented by MASLSA in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, Bishnupur and Moirang Subdivision under Bishnupur district covering the villages Naran Seina, Terakhongsangbi, Tronglaobi, Khudekpi, Moirang and Moirang Khunou.
Further, for the project ‘Reaching the unreached’, a poster campaign on legal aid and services will be added. It provides awareness to the masses on legal aid and services provided by legal services institutions to ensure that opportunities of securing justice are not denied to any person by reason of economic, social and other disabilities.
The campaign will also promote the Lok Adalat and mediation as important, less time consuming and cost-effective alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
