Condemning the alleged firing at the residence of BJP intending candidate of Keirao assembly constituency Tojam Devananda at Keiyamgei, Imphal East, villagers of Kiyamgei on Thursday staged a sit-in protest in front of the candidate’s residence.
Some unidentified individuals came in a moped and fired five rounds at the residence of Devananda at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, sources said. In regards to the incident, an FIR has been lodged to the Iribung police station and investigation is underway, police said.
Such an attack in a residential area has caused panic and fear among the locals, particularly the women and children of Keiyamgei, said a protestor while speaking to the media.
Urging the person(s) responsible for the attack to not repeat such terrorising acts in the future, the protesters further questioned who will be responsible if anyone gets hurt in the attack.
Sister of the candidate Toijam Bijentimala said that Devananda has not hurt anyone; however, since the day he announced to contest the election, he has been at the receiving end of several threats and attacks.
She asked the person(s) responsible for the attack to state the reason behind the attack. “Such an act is unacceptable. Attacking Devananda must be immediately stopped,” she added.
