Residents of Kangpokpi has expressed concern over the ever-increasing use and trafficking of drugs in district headquarters.
A decision on various other issues, including the Asian Highway By-pass of Kangpokpi town, was also adopted during the public meeting jointly organised by the Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, and Kangpokpi Youth Union in coordination with Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, Kangpokpi.
The Kangpokpi Town Public meeting viewed the increasing and rampant use, sale, and supply of illegal drugs as a threat to the younger generation of the town in particular and the nation as a whole.
To make the town completely free from drugs, the public unanimously declared war on drugs and reaffirmed to strictly prohibit the use, sell, and supply of drugs in Kangpokpi, and also to immediately identify all drug users, sellers, and suppliers.
KTC, KWWO, and KYU have been vested with full authority to sternly deal with all such illegal/contraband drug cases as deemed fit, as per the meeting.
The meeting observed that the public authority should also take stern punitive action against any such drug users, sellers, and suppliers of Kangpokpi town in accordance with prevailing customary laws or whatsoever while they report or submit to the police as deemed fit.
The meeting also unanimously resolved that all parents of drug abusers in the town should send their respective wards/children to drug rehabilitation centres or juvenile correction centres within one month with immediate effect, lest punitive measures will be taken up by the public.
The Kangpokpi Town Committee shall frame rules and regulations on the quantum of punishment or penalty which may be imposed on drug users, sellers, and suppliers under the purview of customary Laws, and specified rules framed in this regard, as per the meeting.
In connection with the Asian Highway By-pass of Kangpokpi town, the meeting unanimously resolved to fight in favour of the proposed Asian Highway By-pass of Kangpokpi town on the western flank of the town and request the NHIDCL to continue the construction work of the by-pass road of Kangpokpi town as proposed by the people of Kangpokpi town at the earliest in the public interest.
The public of Kangpokpi town further resolved that any individual, association, or organisation which acts against the wishes of the people of Kangpokpi town in connection with Kangpokpi town by-pass road shall be regarded as 'Anti-Kangpokpi town' and shall be dealt with sternly as deemed fit by the public.
