The ongoing construction of water reservoirs at Kakching Khunou in Kakching district were inspected by Sugnu assembly constituency MLA K Ranjit Singh on Monday, during which many leakages were allegedly found at the said reservoirs.
The said reservoirs are reportedly being constructed under the Augmentation of Urban Water Supply scheme with funds of around Rs 9,12,00,000 from the New Development Bank (NDB).
It is quite unfortunate to find these many leakages at the water reservoirs constructed by such a reputable company with funds of crores of rupees, said K Ranjit.
He said that more than 20 leakages were found at two of the three water reservoirs constructed under the water supply scheme. He advised the PHED chief engineer and Keystone, the company assigned with the construction of the project, to re-examine the damages and maintain proper quality.
“Despite the state government’s assurance of good quality infrastructures by assigning Urban projects to Keystone, the outcomes of sub-par infrastructures have proven otherwise,” he said. He also urged the state government to give projects to the local contractors in order to promote healthy competition, claiming that it would result in better quality constructions in the state.
At the drive, PHED chief engineer Shangreiphao Vashum assured that the leakages of the reservoirs will be fixed immediately and the water supply scheme will be completed in a month.
One local raised suspicion that the filter reservoir along with the two reservoirs was leaking and appealed to the authorities concerned to maintain proper quality in the construction of the water supply.
The leaking water from the reservoirs has flowed over to the Indo-Burma road at Sugnu, he added.
