Kakching Blast: Two ITBP personnel on poll duty injured

Security arrangement has been stepped up in Kakching district following an IED blast that occurred around 9 pm Sunday.

At least two personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on election duty for the ensuing Manipur Assembly elections 2022 sustained injuries in an RC-IED blast that took place in Kakching district late Sunday, official sources said.

"The attack was done by RC-IED battery and wire, it was not a granade or remote control attack," the SP,  Kakching district, who rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, said.

The incident occurred around 9 pm near a pharmacy in Wangoo Lupa Marup, Imphal-Sugnu road. The ITBP personnel were on routine patrol duty along the road stretch when the IED explosion took place, the SP said.

"The RC-IED was triggered when the ITBP personnel was on routine patrol duty along the road stretch," the SP said,

The SP said that the injured have been identified as constable Girja Shankar, 30, and constable Gourav Rai, 26, both from Uttarakhand. They were rushed to Jivan Hospital in Kakching, but were shifted to Shija Hospital, Imphal on Monday morning, and are out of danger, he said.

"They were shifted to Shija Hospital, Imphal. They got injured in the leg and chest, now they are out of seriousness," the SP said

An FIR has been lodged and police are on investigation to map the culprits. So far no militant group has own responsibility for the blast. However, it is suspected to be done by UG militants, the SP added.

The SP further said that security arrangement has been stepped up in the district following the incident.
