JNIMS doctors successfully conduct revision knee surgery

According to Doctors of JNIMS, 64-year-old Waikhom Ningthemjao of Kodompokpi was diagnosed with bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) of the Proximal Tibia.

JNIMS doctors successfully conducted revision knee Mega prosthesis replacement surgery after bone tumour (Osteosarcoma) of proximal tibia on a 64-year-old man.

According to Doctors of JNIMS, 64-year-old Waikhom Ningthemjao of Kodompokpi was diagnosed with bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) of the Proximal Tibia. He was treated at TATA Cancer Hospital for which knee joint replacement surgery with Mega prosthesis was done in 2009, the doctors said.

Speaking to media persons at JNIMS, Waikhom Ningthemjao said that he started having the problem after he fell down incidentally in 2007. Following that he went to TATA Cancer Hospital at Mumbai and had knee joint replacement surgery with Mega prosthesis in 2009. But some years later, pain and instability of the knee joints began and he felt difficulty in walking without support.

He said that he lost hope of treatment again as it cost a lot of money treating at Mumbai or other states. He consulted doctors of various hospitals and almost lost hope of getting treatment as he could not afford the cost.

Meanwhile, he tried at JNIMS for the last time and finally, without spending much money, the doctors at JNIMS conducted surgery successfully, he said.

According to knee replacement expert Dr Heishnam Angamba of JNIMS, the revision knee replacement is a tough surgery in comparison with other implant surgeries. In any replacement of the knee, there is life span. At TATA Cancer Hospital, the patient had a knee implant of Titanium knee, while for revision replacement at JNIMS, custom-made implant mega prosthesis knee was used, he said.

According to the Director of JNIMS, Dr L Deven, Ningthemjao came to JINIMS in November 2023 and consulted with Dr Heishnam Angamba Singh (Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon) and Dr Ch Banikanta Sharma, HoD, Orthopaedics Dept. along with his team of surgeons of JNIMS conducted surgery (revision of the Mega prosthesis) on December 23, 2023 at JNIMS.

The director said that there may be some incident due to communication gap, however, JNIMS will provide surgery free of cost under CMHT scheme.
