The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday vehemently condemned the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for the defamation case against Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, who was sentenced to a two-year imprisonment. It was a "well-planned punishment" for speaking the truth, the MPCC said.

"Jail sentence to the one speaking the truth, while rewarding the fraudsters has become a policy for the Modi-led BJP government," said MPCC president K Meghachandra while speaking to the media at Congress Bhawan in Imphal.

"The Modi government's stand to shield corporates like Adani, Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi who are allegedly involved in multi-crores fraud cases  is in fact an attempt to remove secularism from Preamble and replace it with crony capitalism," he alleged.

Similarly, the same goes with replacing democracy with dictatorship, he added.

He said, “It is indeed surprising to witness that none of the BJP leaders and those having close ties with the BJP, who were involved in fraud cases are facing the wrath of CBI, NIA, Income Tax department or the ED while the Opposition leaders are being attacked using those agencies on false allegation with an attempt to tarnish their image".

Further reacting to the instant disqualification of Rahul from the MP seat without following any due procedure of the ECI guidelines, he said it is a "dirty move and an attack on the opposition".

Rahul simply questioned the reason for not initiating action against those who looted crores of rupees, he said, adding that the action against Rahul was “bizarre and abnormal.”

It is strongly believed that the higher court will stay the judgment order against Rahul, he said. The Congress will fight the case legally and politically for the cause of democracy, he added.

Meanwhile, volunteers of Manipur Youth Congress Committee took out a demonstration rally from Congress Bhawan to Raj Bhawan as a protest against "the crony capitalism of the BJP government and in solidarity with Rahul Gandhi."
