Irate locals of Heirok on Tuesday stormed the 37 Assam Rifles Battalion in Phundrei, demanding punishment to Army personnel for causing fear in the localities.
As per reports, a team of 25 personnel of the 37 AR, including four women personnel, came to Heirok at around 11 am on Tuesday for their area operation but locals stopped them from entering the area. Following the blockade by the people, the AR left the scene and returned to their battalion.
People of Wangjing, Khongjom and Langathel also joined the mob.
Thoubal district rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob. The SP Thoubal assured the mob that the AR personnel will be kept in the battalion.
Meanwhile, an apex body of 24 clubs in Heirok expressed suspicion that there might be Kuki militants among the 37 AR personnel and warned the government of intense agitation by the people.
