International Day of Families observed in Manipur

International Day of Families day is commemorated each year on May 15 to provide an opportunity for promoting awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and the Department of Law, Manipur University, joined the world in observing the International Day of Families under the theme: ‘Families and Climate Change’ on Wednesday at the Conference Hall, Dept of Chemistry, MU.

This day is commemorated each year on May 15 to provide an opportunity for promoting awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

Though this year’s theme is ‘Families and Climate Change’, a technical session was held on the impact and effects of climate change on families while encouraging them to take action to mitigate the impacts.
The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action.

The observation was attended by Kangjam Khagendra Singh, member, Manipur Human Rights Commission; Yumnam Premananda Singh, Head, Department of Law, Manipur University; N Rajen Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry, Manipur University.

While observing the day, MHRC acknowledged the important role being played in the society in general and as a member of the family in particular.

It should be mentioned that to increase awareness of family issues and human rights of the older persons and senior citizens, MHRC and Department of Law, Manipur University, initiated a week-long campaign starting from May 8 by visiting Old Age and Senior Citizen’s Home as mandated under Section 12(c) of the Protection of Human Rights Act.

The commission, taking advantage of the observation programme, gave a presentation of the campaign stating that during the visit they assess and study the living conditions of the older persons and senior citizens. While visiting there, they not only spread human rights awareness and safeguards available to them, they also review the government's existing policies and laws from human rights perspective and make recommendations to the state government for better implementation to ensure better promotion and protection of human rights of the older persons and senior citizens.

During the technical session, as resource persons, Nongthombam Guneshwar Singh, Assistant Professor Vishal Law Institute; Chongtham Shaibalini Devi, Assistant Professor Royal Academy of Law; N Brajakanta, Faculty Law Department Manipur University; W BasantaKumar, Law Officer, MHRC and Anar Pintu, former Board Member UN Voluntary Fund for victim of torture spoke on various topics.
