International Biodiversity Day 2022 observed

SEED organised a webinar webinar under the theme ‘Building a shared future for all life’.

The International Day for Biodiversity, 2022 was also organised by Society for Environment Education and Development (SEED) in a webinar as part of the observation on Sunday.

In a release, SEED stated that the webinar was organised under the theme ‘Building a shared future for all life’.

The webinar commenced with SEED secretary RK Imosana’s introductory speech in which he elaborated the importance of biodiversity and global initiatives towards its conservation, it added.

It continued that state divisional forest officer of Forest department N Ganesh attended the programme as the chief guest and resource person of the webinar. He elaborated on Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS), Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT).

Ganesh said that ABS can contribute to further research and development of human well-being through the use of genetic resources in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture and many other sectors.

It further stated that president of the programme SEED president and Manipur Shakti convenor Asha Gupta talked on the rich floristic components of Northeast India, ecosystem services, and significance of ‘Diversitas’, an international programme initiated by UNESCO on biodiversity and Green India mission.

She mentioned on the conservation roles of sacred groves of Manipur especially with reference to protection of important germplasm, she concluded that the cultural aspect of management of sacred grove is to be linked with the scientific management of the whole range of biodiversity, it added.

It commended Manipur Shakti vice president Daisy Angom, SEED joint secretary L Usharani, programme officer Santosh Nahakpam for working for the successful organisation of the webinar.
