Interaction programme on climate change reporting held

The monthly consultative meeting cum interaction programme on climate change reporting organised by Media Resource Centre, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change was held at the directorate's conference hall on Saturday.

In the programme, head of Geography department, Manipur University professor Kh Pradipkumar and senior consultant of the directorate Manichandra Sanoujam gave detailed talks about the river systems in Manipur.

Speaking on the occasion, professor Pradipkumar highlighted the various characteristics which aided in the study of river systems.

River maturity is one such defining characteristic which is crucial in the study of river systems, he added.

He also pointed out river rejuvenation cannot be an isolated effort but rather a concerted effort which involved all individuals in the community.

"Rivers cannot be rejuvenated in segments, the rejuvenation process has to be taken up throughout the entire river system starting from the catchments," he said.

As such he stressed the need to exhort community participation in the mammoth undertaking.

Meanwhile, editor of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics Pradip Phanjoubam emphasised the need to create a balanced story in reporting on climate change.

Mediapersons have to understand scientific terminology and processes so that they can simplify and relay it to the masses, he said. 

He stated that mediapersons should approach each story with an objective to awaken the masses.

Joint director of Environment directorate T Brajakumar singh, senior journalist Sobhapati Samom along with media fellow recipients of the Climate Change Reporting fellowship among others were present at the meeting.
