The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended immediate suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s Northeastern states with the neighboring country.

Taking to X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR since the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping the Free Movement Regime.

"It is Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji's resolve to secure our borders. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar be scrapped to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar. Since the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR," the union home minister posted.

It may be mentioned that on February 6, the Central government announced that a fence will be constructed along the 1,643 km Indo-Myanmar border.

"Out of the total border length, a 10 km stretch in Moreh, Manipur, has already been fenced. Furthermore, two pilot projects of fencing through a Hybrid Surveillance System (HSS) are under execution. They will fence a stretch of 1 km each in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Additionally, fence works covering approx 20 km in Manipur have also been approved, and the work will start soon," Amit Shah had posted on X.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their commitment to secure the borders.

CM Biren said in an X post that the decision to scrap the FMR is crucial for the internal security and the demographic integrity of the Northeastern states.

The decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, as recommended by @HMOIndia, is crucial for our internal security and the demographic integrity of our North Eastern States. This is yet another historic decision in curbing illegal immigration and strengthening our internal security after the recent announcement to fence the 1643 Km Indo-Myanmar border by Government of India," CM Biren wrote on X.
