‘Inclusion of Meetei in ST list will save the community’

Reiterating the need to enlist Meetei in the ST list to safeguard the existence of the community, World Meetei Council (WMC) Manipur Unit continued its protest slogan on Sunday at Langmeidong Maning Leikai in Kakching district.

Meira Paibis of Langmeidong Maning Awang Leikai and Mayai Leikai Meira Paibi Lup supported the slogan campaign led by WMC Manipur unit president Urikkhimbam Kunjo and ex member secretary WMC Manipur Unit, Mayanglambam Gyanendro, WMC stated in a release.

It emphasized the significance of Article 342 (1) Scheduled Tribe of the Indian Constitution in ensuring constitutional protection of the indigenous tribes. It pointed out the need for enlistment of the Meetei community in the ST list for sole protection of the existence of the vulnerable community.

It further expressed concern over possible increase in influx of illegal immigrants in Manipur as there is a rail connection in the State now and added that the existing ILPS might likely prove ineffective. It maintained that the only way to safeguard the Meetei community is through enlistment in the ST list.
