Kumbi Yelhoumee Nongmaithem Apunba Lup on Friday imposed an indefinite ban on Moirangthem Mangi’s book, ‘Meitrabakki anganba Matam gi Khuthek Shing amadi Kumbi gi Khuthek’, alleging that the history of Nongmaithem surname has been distorted in connection with foundation of Kumbi area.
The said book is written by National Teacher Awardee Moirangthem Mangi and has been published by his daughter Moirangthem Bhubaneshwari.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, general secretary of the organisation N Shankar alleged that the book wrongly narrated the history of indigenous clans and its affiliated surnames in Kumbi.
“The book presents an extremely distorted narrative of the Nongmaithem surname and other indigenous clans associated with the origin of Kumbi,” he said.
He accused Moirangthem Mangi of specifically maligning the history of Nongmaithem surname which is regarded as one of the six founding surnames of the Kumbi.
“Originally, five surnames were associated with the history of Kumbi. Nongmaithem surname was also added amongst the five later on,” he said.
The five surnames are Khaidem, Wahengbam, Khumanthem, Moirangthem, Khangembam and Nongmaithem.
He maintained that the book could create confusion amongst future generations and lead to unwanted incidents.
The book presents these daunting narratives in pages 15, 39, 79 and 85 specifically, he added.
He further noted that the decision to ban the book had been implemented after thorough discussions with the author and the publisher.
He appealed to all the libraries, book outlets, educational institutions and people who own copies of the book to hand over the copies to the organisation with immediate effect. minister.
