The District Health Society Thoubal organised a one-day hearing awareness and screening camp at Chandrakhong Phanjakhong High School, Chandrakhong village on Wednesday.
The inaugural programme organised under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness was attended by chief medical officer Thoubal Dr Y Nokul Singh and headmaster of Chandrakhong Phanjakhong High School Waikhom Bidyashor Singh as chief guest and president respectively.
District nodal officer, the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness Dr N Pinky Chanu and community health officer of Health and Wellness Centre Y Sandhya Devi attended as guests of honour.
Y Nokul Singh briefly explained about hearing loss, how to prevent it and to reduce its impact. He also explained the causes of hearing loss. He said that hearing loss among newborns is due to family history, infections suffered by the mother during pregnancy, premature birth, lack of oxygen at the time of birth, or severe jaundice soon after birth.
Among children and adults, the causes are due to infections such as meningitis, measles, mumps, or ear infections with discharge and others.
During the programme, IEC materials on deafness prevention and the role of family, community, and other stakeholders were also distributed to the student and the public.
Dr N Pinky Chanu, ENT Specialist, DNO, NPPCD, and Dr O Birjit Singh, ENT specialist of District Hospital Thoubal, and other para medicals staffs conducted a hearing Screening camp at the spot.
Altogether, 128 students and the general public got benefitted from the camp.
