Renowned Manipuri psychiatrist Dr RK Lenin on Sunday stated that good sleep is one of the vital components of a healthy routine to increase productivity and longevity of life.
“Drinking alcohol, taking medicines without prescription increase mental tensions which can lead to sleep depravity. Therefore, we need to keep these issues in check,” he said.
He was speaking at the World Sleep Day observation which was held on the theme ‘Good Sleep for Good Health’ at Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, Imphal. The observation was organised by Share and Care group.
Lenin further asserted that maintaining a healthy diet and changing the sleep cycle per age was vital to lead a stable life.
“Tension is one of the primary reasons behind sleep depravity. Sleep depravity can also lead to tension,” he said.
He highlighted that the people should not take sleep medications without the doctor’s advice as it could lead to other health issues. He also expressed discontentment over the present trend of parents forcing their children to study till late at night and wake up early.
The failure to provide ample relaxation time for the brain could lead to learning disabilities down the line, he said. He noted good sleep was the key to embark on an energetic peaceful life.
Imphal East chief medical officer Dr L Indira, retired additional director of Health services Dr Kunjabihari among others also attended the event.
