An Irate mob vandalised and committed arson at the residence of former MLA of Saikul assembly constituency, Yamthong Haokip, located at Mantripukhri, Imphal West late Sunday, 25 days after the communal clash erupted in the state.

It is reported that the incident occurred around 5 pm on Sunday. Later, a team of Manipur fire service put off the fire. However, three four-wheeler cars, one two-wheeler, granary, and most part of the house were damaged.

Neighbours of the former MLA told the media that Yamthong has been undergoing treatment outside the state for his heart surgery and his wife, Sapam Charubala Devi and his daughter were living in the house.

Charubala and her daughter were also out of town since Wednesday for appearing in the UPSC examination.

It may be recalled that a mob earlier vandalised the residence of Uripok AC MLA Kh Raghumani at Uripok Sorbon Thingel on Sunday after the MLA’s son reportedly opened fire at a large group of people who thronged the residence.

The mob vandalised all properties inside the MLA’s residence and set ablaze the MLA’s security vehicles along with others parked at his warehouse near his residence.

Locals also stormed the residence of Wangjing MLA Paonam Brojen at Wangjing-Heirok Lamkhai in Thoubal district on Sunday after hearing the news of a commando being killed in a shootout in the areas of Sugnu and Serou with the Kuki militants.

Protesters pelted stones at the MLA’s residence demanding him to resign from his post. Some window mirrors were destroyed by the mob.

Meanwhile, miscreants also committed arson at a multipurpose hall, Kuki Inn, Babupara, Imphal on Sunday.

Most of the furniture inside the hall were damaged but with the timely response from the Manipur Fire Service team stopped the fire from spreading further to the surrounding houses.
