Floodgates at Sekmai barrage fail to open

Attempts to pull up the shutters of the floodgates at Sekmai Barrage, Keirak in Kakching district of Manipur failed on Tuesday, causing apprehensions of artificial flooding in the area.

While Sekmai river which courses through Kakching district ran above danger mark, attempts to pull up the shutters of the floodgates at Sekmai Barrage, Keirak in Kakching district of Manipur failed on Tuesday, causing apprehensions of artificial flooding in the area.

The floodgates failed after the cables of two the shutters snapped while one of the shutters jammed and one shutter could not move due to failure in the motor.

Historic Kangla Fort breached

Due to incessant downpour, the Imphal river bank was breached near the historic Kangla Fort on Tuesday evening and flooded parts of the compound.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai inspected the security forces, officials of Water Resources and volunteers inside the Kangla.

In a tweet, CM Biren said necessary efforts are underway to protect the site.
