At least five IRB trainee jawans who are undergoing training at the Lachit Borphukan police academy, Dergoan, Assam sustained injuries in a clash that reportedly took place inside the academy campus around 8 pm on Saturday.

As per sources, some of the trainees started fighting with each other, after which another jawan was allegedly attacked with a knife when he tried to stop the fight. He sustained an injury on his forehead, sources said.

A video that surfaced on social media showed an injured trainee receiving first aid. Tensions flared in the academy after the video circulated. However, the concerned officers who were inside the training academy reportedly brought the situation under control.

It may be recalled that the recruits of the 10th and 12th IRB jawans numbering about 1,724 were airlifted from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in a cargo flight.

The new recruits of the 10th and 12th IRB were initially slated for a road trip to Lachit Borphukan police academy, Dergoan in Assam from Manipur Police Training Academy for their basic training. However, the plan was cancelled in response to protest from civil bodies and family members of the recruits due to the present unrest in Manipur.

After considering the safety of the new recruit jawans, Manipur government canceled the road trip and arranged for the airlift as an alternative.

Sources reported that new recruit jawans are placed in four different training places inside the same campus.

The Imphal Free Press attempted to reach officials of the training academy but received no response.

Meanwhile, Manipur Police on X posted that a senior officer from Manipur Police, M Pradip Singh, is being deputed on Sunday to Dergoan to take stock of the situation. "The matter is being monitored by Manipur Police on real time basis and situation is under control,” it stated.
