A global ‘Meitei Unity Summit’ was convened at the Centre for Collaborative Education, Oshawa, Ontario in Canada by the Manipuri Association of Canada (MAC) and the Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA) on Saturday, in an effort to address and find sustainable solutions to the challenges being faced by Manipur.
The summit started with all the attendees pledging their allegiance to the Salai Taret Pheral and homage to the martyrs, stated a release.
The summit brought together key speakers, namely JNU associate professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, IRS (Commissioner of Income Tax) Banita Devi Naorem, secretary (Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Anil Haorokcham, Rajshree Keisam and experts, to engage in a constructive dialogue with an aim to foster a sense of unity and partnership, it stated. The summit marked a momentous occasion of uniting the Meitei community worldwide, fostering a spirit of solidarity, preserving Meitei culture and collective growth, it stated.
The summit was organised with the understanding that a united approach is essential to understand the genesis of the ongoing violence in Manipur. It addressed the need for socio-economic development, reiterated the Meitei demand for ST status, implementation of NRC, and emphasised the role of Meitei diaspora in mitigating the ongoing internecine conflict, it added.
