Election for urban local bodies yet to be finalised: MAHUD minister

Minister Khemchand said that due to COVID-19 pandemic the election of urban local bodies could not be held even though their term was completed in 2021.

Manipur MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand on Monday informed that election for urban local bodies (Municipalities, Nagar Panchayats and Municipal Corporations) is not yet to be finalised.

The minister shared the information during the ongoing 5th session of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Responding to MLA K Meghachandra’s star question regarding election of urban local bodies, Minister Khemchand said that due to COVID-19 pandemic the election of urban local bodies could not be held even though their term was completed in 2021.

Regarding the process of reviewing the financial positions of the urban local bodies by the state finance commissioner, the third state finance commissioner and fourth state finance commissioner recommended that the state government devolves 10 per cent of state’s own tax collection, non-tax and its share in central taxes annually. State government agrees to devolve 10 per cent of the state’s own tax revenue only in view of available resources, the minister added.

In another question put up by MLA Karam Shyam to Water Resource Minister Awangbow Newmai regarding flood management and border areas programme, minister said that Rs 129.01 crore fund has released from central assistance fund so far for critical flood control and anti-erosion works along rivers in Manipur river basin under flood management and border areas programme.
