Expressing happiness on the rescheduling of the poll dates, senior Congress MP Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “I am happy that the Election Commission has agreed to the request made by the Indian National Congress three weeks back to shift the day of the first phase of voting in Manipur.”

On February 8, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India Sushil Chandra during his visit to Manipur had given his assurance that the demand for rescheduling of poll date for the first phase Manipur Assembly election 2022 by the Christian community in the state will be discussed after he returns to Delhi.

The assurance was given following the demand made by All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) to change the date of the first phase of election so that it may not fall on Sunday, which is the day of worship, for the larger interest of the Christian community in the state.

The commission has decided to revise the dates of the poll after having considered inputs, representations, past precedent, logistics, ground situations and all facts and circumstances in the matter, stated a press note issued by the secretary of ECI Sanjeev Kumar Prasad.
