An unknown armed miscreant robbed the driver of a passenger Winger vehicle, which plies on Imphal-Dimapur highway, while on duty from a spot opposite Network parking in Dimapur, Nagaland late Friday.
All Manipur Inter State, State Winger and Cruiser Drivers and Owner’s Union, general secretary Thiyam Standar told the media in Imphal that the incident occurred around 10.30 pm on Friday.
Winger driver Menao from Thoubal has been plying a passenger vehicle service along the Imphal-Dimapur road, he said.
According to him, Menao had parked his vehicle at a spot opposite Network parking, Dimapur, when an unknown man who appeared to be drunk asked Menao to open the vehicle window. He also asked Menao whether he was transporting betel nuts in his vehicle. Later, he took out a pistol and robbed some money. Menao was alone when the incident took place, Standar said.
Standar further appealed to the drivers who are delivering their services to maintain proper discipline and not to drive their vehicle when drunk. Frequent counselling for highway drivers is necessary, he said.
Recalling that a similar incident had occurred in Dimapur, he appealed to the authority concerned to take necessary steps so that winger drivers can park their vehicle at MST, Dimapur. They are unable to park at MST, Dimapur because some locals have occupied the space for personal use, he said.
Standar said there is the MST, Dimapur where transporters from Manipur can park their vehicles but some locals of the area are occupying the area for their personal use. Drivers are reportedly threatened by the locals if they try to park there, he added.
