The undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Dhanamanjuri University on Monday protested, decrying the authorities for not fulfilling their various demands.

Students of UG and PG tried to meet the Vice-Chancellor of the university thrice for urging to arrange an alternate mode to conduct examinations. They also demanded reduction of examination fee, exemption from form fill-up for displaced students and for students who are guarding villages, no examinations of 1st, 3rd and 5th semesters until 4th and 2nd semester exam results are declared. They also stated that due to the delay in the declaration of exam results, students are facing trouble in getting scholarships.

Speaking to the media, DM College of Commerce former general secretary Irish Ngangbam said that the protest began two days ago with the students demanding UG and PG representatives and to declare exam results since November, 2023. They even submitted letters to VC for fulfilling their demands, he said.

Till today, the authorities of the University have not given any response but rather they have issued exam notification for 5th and 3rd semester, he added.

Today, students of the varsity approached the VC to discuss their demand and an alternate mode to conduct examinations. However, the VC and examination controller were not in the office. The results of exams for 2nd and 4th semesters for UG and 1st, 2nd exam of PG have not been declared yet they issued notification conducting exams, he said.

The students tried to meet the Education (U) commissioner, but they were blocked by police. So, some representatives went and met the commissioner of education (U).

Irish said that according to the commissioner, DM University is run by an autonomous body and education (U) is just advisory and that the VC should be one to work for the University.

“When the students met the VC and register of the University long back, they were told to meet higher authority for their grievances. But, when we met the commissioner today, he told us that they are just an advisory body and don’t have power. So, it is the responsibility of the VC to handle grievances and fulfil students demand”, Irish said, adding that it is very unfortunate that the VC of the University is incompetent, and students are suffering because of their inaction.
