In a big relief for the people of Tamenglong district in Manipur, the district and sessions court was on Saturday virtually inaugurated by Manipur High Court Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar in the presence of Law Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, Justice A Bimol Singh, Advocate General of Manipur Lenin Singh Hijam and local MLA Janghemlung Panmei.
Deputy commissioner Tamenglong Pawan Yadav, Superintendent of Police Anupam, Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Civil Judge Senior Division, Tamenglong Dr Laishram Rina Devi, sub-divisional officer Tamenglong, Paul Nangsha, members of the Bar Association, Tamenglong also attended the event at Tamenglong.
The district and sessions court will function at the temporary building in the premise of the Deputy Commissioner's office until the construction of the CJM court building at Khoupilong, Ward No V is completed. So far, the district and sessions court of Tamenglong has been functioning in Imphal West district.
Tamenglong, often termed as one of the most backward districts in the state, was deprived of a district court for years. With no court in the district, people living in this hilly district had no option but to travel to Imphal, the capital city, which is located 147 km away from the district headquarters, for all legal purposes.
It may be recalled that the Imphal Free Press on November 15, 2021 reported on the plight of the people of the hill district who were deprived of a district court.
In 2021 the Forerunner, an NGO, filed a Public Interest Litigation to make the court functional at the district headquarters.
