Disseminate the knowledge acquired in English or a foreign language to one’s mother tongue for eliminating the language barrier and creating a knowledgeable society, Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, advisor to the Union Cultural Ministry said in Imphal Monday.
"The British Education System introduced in 1835 by the East India Company focused on study in English and this has detached us from our own culture," Agnihotri said while speaking at a seminar on NEP 2020, which was held at UNACCO School, Khongman.
NEP-2020 highlighted the importance of teaching in the mother tongue and introduced several reforms to enable the education system to produce global citizens who are well connected to the ancient Indian values, he said.
"Through the mother tongue, one will gain more knowledge than foreign language," Agnihotri said.
Speaking about the difference between the British Education System and NEP, he said the British Education System produces qualification or degree but NEP 2020 will generate qualitative students.
Therefore, the NEP 2020 included a skill development programme to know the skills of students and guide them accordingly, he said, adding that skill development programme is essential to solve unemployment problem.
"Know and understand NEP thoroughly to implement fully," he said.
UNACCO school chairman N Irabanta said, "Learning in one’s mother tongue will increase creativity, knowledge, original thinking and concepts. Implementation of NEP successfully has the role of both private schools equally with the government schools and so, training of teachers of NEP will continue," he said.
