The Harm Reduction Network Manipur (HRNM) has strongly condemned the death of a drug abuser in a suspicious manner at Revive Drug De-Addiction Centre cum Rehabilitation Centre located at Utlou Chanura Heibi Makhong, Nambol on Thursday night.
HRNM stated in a release on Friday that the incident of suspicious death, torture in rehabilitation centre has been occurring over the last few years. Demand has been made from various sections of the society to authorities concerned to pay some attention in this regard.
However, due to the failure of their action, an instance of suspicious death occurred again recently at the Revive Drug De-Addiction Centre cum Rehabilitation Centre, Nambol on Thursday night, the network said.
The release alleged that a person who had died in the centre was reported to be a drug user and under treatment for de-addiction in the said centre.
The HRNM stated that death of drug abusers in rehabilitation centres is getting rampant. This is not the first case but many similar incidents have been witnessed over the last few years.
However, the authorities concerned had failed to punish a single person who was directly or indirectly involved in the case, the network said.
It further appealed to the authorities concerned to take up legal action to prevent any further occurrence of such an incident in the future.
Parents or families of the inmate sent their wards to de-addiction centre with hope and expectation to bring normalcy in their life but not to make them face unbearable torture, the HRNM said.
