The 28th death anniversary of the Manipuri literary giant Padmashree GC Tongbra was commemorated at the Centenary Hall, Manipur University on Monday.
The observation was jointly organised by The Society Theatre Manipur and Manipur department, Manipur University.
Speaking on the occasion, the director of The Society Theatre Manipur, Kangabam Tomba, highlighted the literary impact of GC Tongbra’s satirical writing in Manipuri literature.
Tongbra was deeply influenced by the writings of renowned Irish playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw, he added.
He noted that GC Tongbra’s body of work dealt with the various aspects of social life in Manipur which were satirically addressed and critiqued.
Meanwhile, MU vice chancellor Naorem Lokendra stressed the importance of GC Tongbra’s timeless writings in contemporary Manipuri society.
“Tongbra played a crucial role in shaping the Manipuri cultural landscape,” he said.
GC Tongbra’s monumental play ‘Ngabongkhao’ which cemented his legacy in Manipuri literature was also played after the formal event.
Head of Manipur Department Loitongbam Birjita Devi, dean of School of Humanities Manipur University Soibam Imoba along with students and scholars took part in the event.
