The Committee on Mass Protest against Assam Rifles on Saturday condemned the alleged intimidation and threatening of the committee spokesperson by state security personnel on Friday at the spokesperson’s personal residence.

“The state forces came to the spokesperson’s residence on Friday and directly threatened the spokesperson; we appeal to the authorities concerned to stop such despicable tactics or else the committee would resort to a slew of intense agitations,” the committee cautioned.

Speaking to the media at an undisclosed location in Imphal, committee member Bijyalakhsmi Yumlembam stated that the threat and intimidation meted by the state police was a targeted attempt to silence people and platforms voicing concerns on the Manipur crisis.

“In this day and age such an unprovoked incident is an infringement upon an individual’s constitutional rights and a tactic to deter and intimidate the people from participating in further movements,” she said.

She maintained that the state would erupt into chaos if such targeted attacks kept happening to people working on public platforms and as such, she appealed to authorities concerned to stop such despicable unfounded acts in the future.

She cautioned that the committee along with the people would resort to a series of intense agitations if such tactics continued.

On the other hand, she informed that a public convention on the ‘Oppressive Tactics of Assam Rifles to Silence the People’ would be held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen on September 4.

“The Assam Rifles have been involved in a slew of human rights violations. The brutal killing of Manorama is one among many cases in which the force have been directly implicated but till now no justice has been served against them,” she said.
