Conveying the agenda lifted by its spokesperson at UNHRC, the COCOMI on Saturday held a press conference at its new office in Lamphelpat in Imphal West.

COCOMI coordinator Somorendro Thokchom conveyed that Athouba had urged the council to seek a report from the central government on their role in resolving the increasing crisis of unlimited illegal immigration of foreign nationals and cross-border trafficking of drugs and small arms in Manipur and Northeast India from Myanmar; on the measures taken to resolve massive deforestation and opium cultivation in the Hill areas of Manipur, particularly in the immigrant occupied territories in Indo-Myanmar border areas and to initiate a dialogue to address the root causes of the ongoing conflict and to take decisive action to ensure the protection of human rights for the people of Manipur, who are facing exploitation and violence amid the ongoing crisis.

Emphasising the crucial need of the council’s intervention on the above points, Athouba sought to consider these urgent matters and take decisive steps to uphold the principles of human rights, he added.

Additionally, the coordinator provided insights into COCOMI’s perspective on the ongoing crisis contending that it is not an ethnic clash, but an aggression by illegal immigrants and narco-terrorists to create another golden triangle by disintegrating Manipur.

Stating that all the original Kuki in Manipur who have been settled before 1951 have been suppressed under the guns of the illegal immigrants, he said it is the responsibility of all the indigenous groups to tackle together.
