Protesting locals have sought the government’s immediate action to close down plywood factories and sawmills operating in residential areas, saying the air and sound pollution caused by them are affecting the environment and health of the people living in the vicinity
“The Minor Industrial Estate (MIE) plywood factories and sawmills have degraded the condition of the road and the pollutants emitted from the factories and the mills have severely affected the health of the environment and the local people,” residents of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai in Thoubal district said.
The residents held a protest and public rally, which was organised by the JAC Against the Establishing of the Khoirom MIE in Residential Area on Sunday.
The protesters demanded the government to close down the MIE plywood factories and sawmills operating in the locality, or relocate them elsewhere.
“The noise pollution from the mills is affecting the surrounding and disrupting the education of the students,” the protesters said.
During the public rally which was taken out in the residential area, the protesters shouted slogans such as ‘We condemn setting up of plywood factories,’ ‘Relocate the factories,’ and ‘The factories are polluting the environment’, etc.
