Clashes erupted between womenfolk and state police in the bazaar area in Imphal following the Sejam Chirang incident on Thursday wherein two civilians were killed and four others injured in a shootout with suspected Kuki militants.
Following the gunfight, the lifeless body of one Waikhom Boicha alias Nilkamal, 40, son of W Boyai of Kongpal Khaidem Leikai, who was killed on the spot, could not be traced.
However, central security forces reportedly recovered the body and handed it over to Lamshang police station in the evening.
People of Uripok paid floral tribute to the mortal remains after which, the body was carried through Khwairamband Ima Market where hundreds paid floral tribute.
A team of state police led by SP, Imphal West came to get the body as a crowd gathered in and around Khwairamband Ima Market. However, the women who were gathered in the area, tried to block the police from getting the body.
To control the situation, state police along with the Rapid Action Force fired several rounds of stun bombs and teargas shells towards the mob. Later, the security forces overpowered the mob and got the body and deposited it at JNIMS morgue.
Then, the irate mob started to set ablaze a police outpost set up at the Khwairamband Ima Market. Meanwhile, some of the protesters tried to rob guns from the Manipur Gun House located at Thangal Bazaar. However, the state police thwarted the protesters' attempt to rob the guns.
A large mob gathered from different directions towards Wahengbam Leikai and Keishampat junction too.
A combined state and central security forces fired several rounds at Wahengbam leikai junction and Keishampat junction to disperse the mob coming from different directions.
Similar incident also reportedly occurred at Khurai Lamlong.
