A deadly clash reportedly broke out between Kuki and Paite militants in Churachandpur town on Sunday with the sound of gunfire echoing through the town, threatening years of peace between the communities.

The violence highlighted simmering tensions between the Kukis and Paites, months after ethnic violence broke out between Meiteis and Kukis in Churachandpur district, which has led to widespread violence, death, displacement and incidents of alleged gang rape.

According to sources, the shooting reportedly took place around 7 pm.

Following the shootout, civilians sought refuge indoors from guns and snipers on the streets. A similar clash also reportedly took place between armed militants of the two communities in Sangaikot area around the same time.

The gunfight between the two sides continued as per reports last received. There was no word of any casualties till the time of filing this report.
